healthyliving award sponsors Health Conscious Restaurant of the Year


The healthyliving award is delighted to be the sponsor of the Health Conscious Restaurant of the Year Award at this year's inaugural Scottish Restaurant Awards.

Three establishments from throughout Scotland were shortlisted:

  • Alfies, Uddingston
  • Grassroots Cafe, Glasgow
  • Urban Angel, Edinburgh

A glittering award ceremony was held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre on 28th January 2008, where the winner was announced as

Alfies, Uddingston


Managed by catering services company Eurest, Alfies serves up to 350 staff every day at Alfred McAlpine. Cooking practices were completely renovated last year to ensure fresh food could be prepared in a healthy way. Alfies also holds the healthyliving award.

The Scottish Restaurant Awards have been launched to recognise the creativity, outstanding customer service and top quality dining that is on offer throughout Scotland.


Eating out is a big part of life in Scotland whether for fine dining or for family meals.  The Scottish restaurant sector has a major role in the daily lives of many Scots, both as an employer and as a service provider. These awards will celebrate and reward the very best restaurants in the field across a variety of categories. The winners will be the restaurants, restaurateurs, chefs and staff that are setting the standards for others to aspire to.


The Health Conscious Restaurant of the Year award is one of 12 categories that make up The Scottish Restaurant Award, each category focuses on a different type of dining experience, for example Best Pub Grub, Best Family Friendly and Best Fine Dining restaurant.

The healthyliving award is sponsoring the Health Conscious Restaurant category as part of its efforts to make it easier for Scots to buy healthier options when they eat out.

Claire Brown, Project Manager of the healthyliving award, said: Eating out is a big part of life in Scotland, whether its a family meal in a restaurant or a bite to eat in your local pub or workplace canteen.

Demand for healthier options has grown significantly in recent years so we were keen to see which food outlets the public thought were responding to this."

Each of the three restaurants in the Health Conscious Restaurant of the Year category was visited by a panel of judges, when they were judged on their menu, ingredients, preparation and cooking methods.
