Caterers celebrate Success

21 March 2018

Caterers from across the length and breadth of Scotland will today, 21 March 2018, be rewarded for ensuring that at least 50% of their menu contains healthier options by the healthyliving award, part of NHS Health Scotland.

Today’s annual award ceremony hosted by NHS Health Scotland and chaired by Fergus Chambers, Chairman of Braehead Foods and former Managing Director of Cordia LLP, will celebrate the success of 80 businesses and organisations. Of these 38 are first time award achievers while 42 are being rewarded for achieving the higher level of award the healthyliving award plus (HLA plus). All awards have been achieved in the past 12 months.

The awarded businesses will hear from Scotland’s recently appointed National Chef and winner of MasterChef: The Professionals 2016, Gary MacLean, and from Robin Gourlay who works on the implementation of the National Food and Drink Policy within the Scottish Government, Scotland Food and Drink and serves the Scottish Food Commission‎.

The healthyliving award forms an integral part of the Scottish Government’s Supporting Healthy Choices; A Framework for Voluntary Action and is part of a national drive to make it easier for people to make a healthier choice and to reduce health inequalities.

Food and diet play a major role in health and wellbeing. Inequality in access to a healthy diet contribute towards health inequalities. Evidence suggests that overall, the food and drink provided out of home is skewed towards less healthy options[1], the businesses recognised today are transforming their immediate environment to make it easier for their customers to access healthier food choices.

The ceremony is taking place today at the Merchants House of Glasgow.

National Chef of Scotland, Gary MacLean said:

“I am delighted to be here today and celebrate the success and hard work of these caterers. I commend the commitment shown from these chefs, cooks and managers who have made it their priority to embrace healthier catering and ensure that their customers are able to choose something healthier to eat.

We all have a part to play in making Scotland healthier and I am proud to see caters from all different types of establishments achieving the healthyliving award. The healthyliving award provides caterers with a framework to work to and a way of being formally recognised for making these important changes to embrace healthier catering.”

Anne Lee, Organisational Lead for Health and Work Award Programmes said:

“The healthyliving award continues to set the national standard for the provision of healthier food in Scotland.  These businesses are leading by example in producing healthy food and meeting the national standard which all food outlets should strive to attain.”

These award holders are helping their customers to make healthy choices by making these options widely available and taking steps to alter the food environment; they are playing their part in improving the diet of people across Scotland.”

Notes to Editors

  1. The healthyliving award is supported by the Scottish Government and NHS Health Scotland and is a key driver for a healthier Scotland by helping people to make small changes to their diet.  It forms an integral part of the route map to prevent overweight and obesity, and is part of a drive to reduce inequalities.
  2. The healthyliving award is free and open to most food serving outlets in Scotland, but specifically places where people go to buy food regularly, such as workplace restaurants, cafés, sandwich shops, further education refectories, hospital canteens, and restaurants.
  3. To qualify for the healthyliving award, caterers need to meet a set of key criteria, which includes a commitment to providing and supporting healthier eating. This includes reducing levels of fat, salt and sugar, making fruit and vegetables more easily available, ensuring 50% of the menu is healthier and adopting promotion and marketing that encourages healthier eating.
  4. The healthyliving award plus is the higher level of award. Businesses must hold a standard level for 2 years prior to achieving this. To qualify for the healthyliving award plus, caterers must; increase provision and promotion of healthyliving choices, ensure 70% of the menu is healthier with at least 50% in each section of the menu.
  5. The award is delivered by a team with expertise and experience in the food and catering industry.
  6. There are over 1100 caterers across Scotland who have achieved the award or actively working towards accreditation.
