Welcome to the third edition of coretalk
It’s hard to believe that the first anniversary of the healthyliving award is nearly upon us – and what a year it has been! With in excess of 500 businesses now registered and more than 100 awards achieved, caterers across the length and breadth of Scotland have thrown their weight behind the healthyliving award.

Many of those who are supporting healthier eating will receive their awards at presentation ceremonies later in the summer.

In this edition of coretalk we hear from one of our most recent award winners, a 300-year-old inn in the Scottish Borders, whose owners are making it easier for their customers to eat healthily.

If you are in the process of working towards the award, take a look at our feature on submitting your self-assessment. We’ve also included a delicious summer recipe you might want to include on your menu, or why not extend the healthy eating approach and try it at home?

Award-holders who can’t stop achieving

Three award holders have received further recognition for their efforts in promoting healthier eating by being shortlisted for another prestigious national award.

The establishments credited for their healthy living activities at the Catering in Scotland Excellence Awards, held on Thursday 10th May at the Hilton Glasgow, were:

  • Café Derran at the Auchterderran Centre in Fife;
  • Eurest at Scottish Power in Cathcart; and
  • Compass at the Royal Bank of Scotland.

The ceremony was attended by the elite of the Scottish catering sector and each of the 10 award categories recognised excellence across the industry.

The Healthyliving Excellence Award, sponsored by Almond Catering in association with the healthyliving award, was the most heavily contested of the evening, with entries received from across Scotland.

Each of the shortlisted establishments demonstrated a clear commitment to healthy living by making it easier for staff and customers to enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

Fighting off stiff competition, Café Derran, a Fife Council-operated eatery, emerged triumphant on the night. As well as supporting healthy eating on-site, staff of Café Derran, led by Manager Karen Logan, are spreading the healthyliving message across Fife by delivering talks on healthy eating across the region.

This enthusiasm and commitment made them deserving of this national accolade and their obvious delight at achieving the award was enjoyed by all guests at the event.

Commenting on their latest achievement, Karen Logan said “After being encouraged by our customers to nominate Cafe Derran for the Healthyliving Excellence Award, I was extremely surprised and delighted to be informed that we were shortlisted as one of the finalists. Myself and the team attended the award ceremony, all thinking that it would be a lovely team evening out, and never thinking that we would stand a chance of winning the award especially being up against such strong competition. To say we were dumb struck when we were announced as the winner is an understatement.”

“Myself and my team put a considerable amount of work and effort, albeit very enjoyable work and effort, into attaining the healthyliving award and to be presented with the excellence award is the biggest accolade that we could have possibly wished for. This award has not only affected ourselves but also our customers who are very proud of their restaurant."
