Welcome to the first edition of
coretalk, the newsletter for the new
healthyliving award. In coretalk we will provide you
with all the current news and developments from the award.
What is the healthyliving award?

It is a national award for the foodservice sector in Scotland that rewards caterers who make it easier to eat healthily when eating out.

Sponsored by the Scottish Consumer Council and Scottish Executive, the award forms an integral part of the healthyliving brand.

The healthyliving award was launched in August 2006 and by October we were presenting our first awards. The first six months has seen the food service sector embrace the healthyliving award, making it easier for people across Scotland to make healthy choices when eating out.

Introducing the sign of healthier food

By Andy Kerr, Minister for Health and Community Care

In recent years, awareness of the benefits of a healthy diet and lifestyle has risen significantly.  However, we do recognise that more must be done to improve access to healthier foods so that the healthy choice is the easy choice for everyone.

Andy Kerr and Claire Brown, Project Manager

Making sure we enjoy a healthier diet at home is of course only part of the answer.  People are eating out more and as a consequence caterers are in a position to influence both consumer awareness of healthy choices and more importantly, the actual provision of healthy food to customers.

The healthyliving award encourages caterers to respond to this consumer demand by recognising and rewarding those who provide their customers with fresh, high quality healthy foods, and thus play their part in improving the health of the nation.

The award will improve the availability of healthier food by proving that by making small changes to menus, food can be both delicious and healthy.  It is available to a wide variety and range of food outlets, from workplace restaurants catering for hundreds of consumers per day, to small local cafes.

Any catering establishment with a commitment to healthy food should apply for the award to maximise the impact it will have on the food industry as a whole.  It makes economic sense too – by meeting the rising demand for healthier meals, the industry has the potential to make increased sales.

A fantastic 282 establishments have already applied for the award and 15 have successfully achieved it since its launch in October. This demonstrates that there is great enthusiasm among the public and caterers alike for the wider availability of healthy choices.

Identifying that your company has made this commitment to healthy food will be made simpler through the healthyliving award ‘green apple’ brand.  Having this easily recognisable symbol will allow the public to identify quality healthy choices at a glance, something which there is overwhelming public support for.

I’d like to congratulate those who have already registered for the award and encourage consumers to look for the healthyliving award apple, the sign of healthier food whenever they eat out.
