Welcome to the autumn edition of coretalk for 2010

It’s been a busy year for the healthyliving award, with more caterers than ever coming on board. Special congratulations must go to those who have been with us right from the start, and the first of these have now achieved the award for an impressive third time.

With the number of awards achieved to date ever increasing, and many more establishments working towards accreditation, it’s becoming much easier for people to eat more healthily when out and about.

In this issue you can read about how the award fits into the Scottish Government’s long-term strategy to prevent obesity. Plus, find out how you can now eat healthily on the high seas with NorthLink Ferries.

And speaking of the sea, don’t forget to try the delicious recipe for herb crusted salmon fillet!

Award holders score a hat trick

Just over four years on from the launch of the healthyliving award, the earliest award holders are showing superb commitment and consistency by renewing their awards for a third term.

First to achieve this success was Eurest Services at Chivas Brothers in Dumbarton.  They were one of the first establishments to gain the award back in 2006, and are now in their fifth year as award holders.

Group Manager Anne Marie Martin explained how the healthyliving award has now become part of their way of working: “It’s a lot easier now than when we started, as it has become part of our everyday routine.

“We’ve learned what healthier dishes are likely to be popular - for example anything with chunky vegetables, such as vegetable balti and rustic vegetable ratatouille, which we serve with baked potatoes.

“We also sell a lot of stuffed peppers and large stuffed mushrooms, and the salad bar and deli bar always go down a treat with the 600 workers who eat here.”

Anne Marie is putting her wealth of experience with the award to good use within Eurest Services: “When catering managers from other sites ask my advice about going for the healthyliving award there is often a note of panic in their voices!

“However I tell them to look calmly at what they are already doing and more often than not they will already be three quarters of the way to meeting the criteria”.

The award is valid for two years, after which establishments must pass a further assessment visit to renew their award, or, optionally, to progress to the higher level healthyliving award plus.

In recent months increasing numbers of award holders have been opting to go for the plus award, encouraged by the realisation that with just a little bit more effort they could achieve this extra special accolade.

With all this activity, an estimated 220,000 people a day on average are eating in award-holding establishments where it’s easy to eat healthily. That’s great news for Scotland’s diet, and great news for people all across Scotland who are increasingly looking for healthier options when eating out
