News bites

Website offers food for thought

The Food & Health Alliance has expanded its website to encompass a wealth of useful information for everyone in Scotland with an interest in food and health. The site, managed by Health Scotland, and supported by the Scottish Executive and the Food Standards Agency Scotland, now includes a specialised networking section for members.

www.fhascot.org.uk is designed to represent the range of stakeholders involved in implementing a multi-sector, food-chain based food and health strategy.

“The website now includes a wide range of regularly updated information,” says Kate Barlow, Food & Health Alliance co-ordinator. “As well as news and events, there is a library of resources on numerous food-related topics, as well as policy documents and links to other resources. Members can also log in and share information and make useful contacts. It’s a very useful resource for anyone working in this area.”

If you have a keen interest in food and health, you can sign up to become a member. Just visit www.fhascot.org.uk to find out more.

Caterers far and wide are making menus healthier

All kinds of eateries* are eligible for the healthyliving award, and an ever-widening range of establishments are choosing to register. Cafés, workplace restaurants and student refectories are common signatories, but some of the more unusual outlets include a mobile catering van in Edinburgh and several oil platforms in the North Sea.

In fact, everything from day centres to delis and pizza outlets to prisons have been keen to sign up for the award. The size of operations varies enormously, with current award winners serving anywhere between 10 and 4000 customers a day! So, wherever you find yourself going to eat, look out for the healthyliving award green apple – it’s the sign of healthier food.

*Schools and establishments serving customers with specific dietary needs are not eligible for the award.

Trying to cut down on your salt consumption? See if you can match the efforts of Compass Group at Royal Bank of Scotland. They report that they now use 65% less cooking salt per month within their Scottish sites since going for the healthyliving award. This equates to a massive 35kg every month!
