From suds to spuds for Healthy T couple

Music fans at T in the Park were able to enjoy the fare from a healthyliving award winner at this year’s popular festival for the first time.

And James and Anita Peggie, who have been running a window cleaning business for 25 years, are now beginning to taste success with their new catering venture, thanks in part to the award.

The couple, from Dunfermline, started the Sir Walter Raleigh Hot Potato Company a year ago, and achieved the healthyliving award in April. In July they took their exciting food offering to T in the Park for the first time, at the request of the Scottish Government who were keen for them to be part of the Healthy T section at the festival.

Anita explained, “We started trading last year, taking our Victorian baked potato oven and gazebo to events across the country. Our first event was Gardening Scotland 2008, and we have also been at farmers markets, highland games and several others. We are learning which types of events are likely to be most successful for us, and now look for those where people are likely to want healthier options.

“We were encouraged to apply for the healthyliving award by our environmental health officer. We could see that it fitted with what we were doing, as our baked potato fillings and home-made soups met most of the criteria already.

“Gaining the award has been very good for business, as it makes us unique and gets us into a lot of events. Event organisers see us as a welcome change from the usual burger vans!”

T in the Park has been their biggest undertaking so far, and Anita and James were kept busy preparing 5000 potatoes for the three days of the festival. The Healthy T area, now in its third year, is growing in popularity, with 25 food vendors taking part this year. Supported by the Scottish Government, it’s a place where festival goers can sit down and relax over some delicious, nutritious food.

Anita continued, “T in the Park went really well for us; lots of people said we were the best food vendor there, and we had 50 people in the queue at any one time. Many people took an interest in the award as well, so we were really happy with how it went.”

Anita and James are hopeful that their continued success will allow them to pour the suds down the drain for good, to concentrate on their catering business. We wish them every success.
