Burnfoot Community Cafe

Burnfoot Community Café is a bustling eaterie popular with a loyal group of regular customers in Hawick. It is run by Burnfoot Community School Kitchen, which is overseen by Scottish Borders Council.

The café was first awarded the healthyliving award in 2011 and was successfully reassessed in October 2013.

Burnfoot Community Centre is open Monday to Friday, offering a wide variety of courses for local people of all ages. The cafe offers a choice of healthy food for students, staff and visitors.

The food is all prepared and cooked from fresh each day in the school kitchen using healthy and nutritious ingredients. Every day, the menu includes a choice of homemade soups, baked potatoes, salads, sandwiches, baguettes and rolls, as well as two hot main dishes.

Some examples of a typical hot dish would be chicken curry, vegetable pasta bake or chilli with rice. The main dishes are also the options that are available to the children in the school that day.

“In the kitchen team, we are all very proud to have obtained the healthyliving award,” said Sheila Clyne, Catering Manager.

“As our menus are nutritionally balanced using the Nutmeg system a lot of what we provided was already healthy but we didn’t realise it until we got going on working towards the award.

“Achieving a healthier lifestyle is very important for everyone using the Community Café as well as all the children in the school.”

Burnfoot Community Café recently held a Green Day to celebrate Burnfoot Community School achieving their third Green Flag award.

They held a green theme day lunch that had green food including green pea soup, broccoli bake with green salad and green iced muffins, all of which went down a treat with the customers.

If you find yourself in the Borders looking for a healthy place to eat, why not pop into Burnfoot Community Café and enjoy one of their healthy lunches?
Note: the healthyliving award is closed to a small number of establishment types, including schools.
