En Croute Catering Ltd, who hold the healthyliving award, have responded to consumer demand and launched their concept of cookery classes.

The evening classes, held in Glasgow, offer a full-on experience of working in a professional, stainless steel industrial kitchen.

At the start of the evening participants are met with canapés and a welcome drink; then the fun begins. After a full demonstration, class members get the chance to create the dishes themselves followed by a delicious tasting session.

At the end of the evening they can take their own food home along with a full recipe pack. Classes cover a range of topics including healthy eating skills, men only, taste of holidays, vegetarian delights and advanced cookery.

Networking for all those with an interest in food and health
By Frances Price, Food and Health Alliance Co-ordinator, Healthy Living Team, NHS Health Scotland

The Food & Health Alliance is a network to support professionals and organisations working in food and health in Scotland.  It was established in 2005 and is managed by NHS Health Scotland.

The website aims to provide useful information for people throughout different food and health sectors within Scotland.

Over the last few years the Food & Health Alliance has gained a wide range of members from within public, private and voluntary sectors. The network provides a forum for professionals working in the food industry and health professionals to debate the future of food and health in Scotland.

Membership of the Food & Health Alliance is free and by becoming a member you are invited to the free annual conference, receive our regular e-alerts on the latest news, consultations and resources that have been produced.

Frances Price, the Food and Health Alliance’s Co-ordinator, explains: “Whether you are working in industry, the public sector or a voluntary/charity group or a student studying food, by joining the Food & Health Alliance it means that you can share information with others throughout Scotland who have similar roles. In the current economic climate gaining the most from resources is vital and the Food & Health Alliance is hoping to provide a useful network throughout Scotland where sharing good practice and information is the norm”.

Table talk
Sarah Goldie (Eurest), Angela Kell (HLA),
Scott Logan (Eurest).

Eurest Catering at Lothian Buses has reported massive reductions in the amount of salt and butter they use, following their achievement of the healthyliving award at the Annandale Street depot in Edinburgh.

Scott Logan of Eurest told us they used to buy in twelve 2-kilo tubs of butter at a time: this is now reduced to less than six tubs.

Similarly, where they used to order a large tub of salt every two weeks, they now find that a tub half the size lasts twice as long.

Customers have not noticed the difference – except that they like knowing the food is now better for them!
