Scots customers want healthy options

The Scottish public is overwhelmingly in favour of healthy options when eating out, according to a recent survey by the Scottish Consumer Council.

The survey, of more than 500 people from across Scotland’s cities, revealed that consumers want a bigger range of healthier choices than is currently available.  Full results are available here.

  • 94% agreed it was important that healthier choices are available to people who eat out.
  • 75% would find it useful if some form of logo is used on a menu or displayed in premises to indicate healthier food choices.
  • 59% were more likely to purchase from a food outlet if it had achieved an award for providing healthier food.
  • 88% agreed that healthy options can be made to taste as good as less healthy fare.
  • 69% were more aware of the need to choose healthy options than they were a year ago.

It also showed that consumers are far more discerning about what they eat than they have perhaps been given credit for in the past.

These results clearly show that Scottish consumers want the choice to eat healthily away from home.  It also demonstrates how the easily-recognisable healthyliving award logo can help to make informed decisions.  We believe the award can help caterers provide this support to their customers whilst encouraging more people to eat in their establishments.

This is a selection of the findings; full results can be found here.
